What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has received a bad rap, but in recent years, some of the science and theories has been proven wrong by newer studies and experience. The reality is, if you are over 35, your Estrogen levels are decreasing and likely a fraction of what they were in your 20s.  It’s just biology… That’s why pregnant women over 35 are considered to have “geriatric pregnancies” (isn’t that flattering for an already emotional/stressful time??!!).

And a decrease in Estrogen can play havoc on your body in unexpected ways. HRT is one tool the medical community can use (and now uses more liberally/frequently) to help ease some of the symptoms. While HRT may not be for everyone, I want you to know that it can be a complete game changer for women suffering in perimenopause and menopause.

Here are some things to know about HRT

  • HRT is NOT Birth Control (This is typically a band aid approach)

  • HRT is typically Estrogen, Progesterone & Testosterone. Some women need only one, some need a combination of 2 or 3. *In most cases if you do take Estrogen, you also need to be on progesterone.

  • HRT comes in many different forms and can be compounded to achieve a perfect dose for you.

  • Forms of HRT may include - injections, pills, patches, creams, troches, sprays, rings, pellets, lozenges.

  • HRT needs to be a collaborative process with your medical provider.

  • HRT takes time to dial in, and may need adjustments at different stages

  • HRT may not be necessary for everyone, but for most women it can improve quality of life dramatically!

  • HRT unfortunately is not covered by insurance, and if you rely on western medicine only, you may find yourself frustrated by the lack of support and options.

As a Certified Wellness Coach, my role is to help you in all aspects of your health, including potentially identifying an imbalance in your hormones through testing, evaluating diet and fitness, and talking with you about what has changed in your life.  Let’s talk and see if HRT is for you or if there’s something else you could try prior.

Rachel
