Why Do you Think You are Failing at Your Goals?

As a coach, sometimes one of the biggest challenges that I face is managing client’s expectations when it comes to their goals. And if I’m being honest, this is also something that I have to personally manage when it comes to my own goals and expectations.

Setting goals (in my opinion) is kinda mandatory if you are expecting to move out of where you are currently, and move towards where you want to be. The problem is that sometimes that GAP between where you are now, and where you want to be has a whole lot of stuff that needs to be addressed. And usually that GAP is also filled with a lot of unknown that we really didn’t expect to have to address or deal with.

So why is it such a challenge to manage? Well because most of us look at goals through a black and white lens. You are “HERE” (where you don’t want to be) and you want to be “THERE” (where you want to be)...but then when you don’t get “THERE” in the time frame you thought you would, then we tend to throw up our hands and either consciously or unconsciously we “DECIDE” that we haven’t reached our goals.

But here’s the deal, that in between “stuff” that’s maybe keeping you from your said “GOAL” is the important stuff. It’s where ALL the lessons and the learnings are, and sometimes that stuff is where the MAGIC is.

So just because you didn’t meet the timeline you wanted, or that goal that you set feels so damn far away, doesn’t mean things aren’t happening, and it doesn’t mean that you don’t continue to set goals. You HAVE to set the goal to create the momentum, but remember the IDENTITY you WANT lies in GAP that you have to FACE.

A great mentor of mine recently said, goals are not a “Pass/Fail” situation. It really hit home. It also allowed me to have some compassion for myself because sometimes things are harder than we anticipated, sometimes life stuff happens, and sometimes we just aren’t ready to go at the pace we thought we could…And all of that is OK.

Keep setting the GOALS…If you do that, you will at least know you are still moving forward.

XO,

Rachel
